Scott Pilgrim Vs. Another Clueless Marketing Team?   Leave a comment

Hey Everybody,

Today is the video release of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and I urge anybody who hasn’t seen this film to pick up a copy and check it out ASAP. I was a little surprised how much I enjoyed this film and how mismarketed it was, missing its target audience almost entirely. With a reported 85 million dollar production budget and only a $45,971,150 worldwide box office take so far, it’s not easy to see it fell short of  Universal’s expectations.  This is what happens when you have people in charge of marketing that have no idea what they have, and who wants to see this kind of film. So, they under market a potential break out hit. They’re not sure how to market something so different and original. It’s a great rockin’ , dry wit,  funny as hell, punk love story, foot stomping  comedy.

I really liked most of director Edger Wright’s other film and TV projects, the brilliant zombie comedy “Sean of the Dead,” the UK TV series “Spaced” is a must see for any Fan boys or girls out there, and  the cop/ action movie send up Hot Fuzz is great satirical fun. The reason I was most surprised about Scott Pilgrim was, I think  it blows away most every other movie in visual concept, originality and just plain “fuck you” to all the people out there who think geeks don’t rule the world. This is what movie making is about, FUN. This movie on every level is fun and utterly watchable. It’s an experience that only a movie can give you and like all good adaptations it bring some much more to the table that the source material does and elevates it to something great. This is what Edgar Wright has done with Scott Pilgrim, made something great.

The comic series by Bryan Lee O’Malley consisted of six digest size black-and-white volumes, released between August 2004 and July 2010, by Portland-based independent comic book publisher Oni Press. The series is about 23-year-old Canadian Scott Pilgrim, a slacker and part-time musician who lives in Toronto and plays bass guitar in the band Sex Bob-omb. He falls in love with American delivery girl Ramona Flowers, but must defeat her seven evil exes in order to date her. Which is exactly what this film plot is, strait from the comic book. I really wasn’t familiar with this comic before hearing about Edgar Wright doing a movie version, but with social interest nagging at me and after talking to my friend Jeff Lee about the book, I decided to take a flip threw it at my local comic shop. I thought it had its charms but wasn’t the kind of comic I usually read, so I put it back and bought an Allan Moore book I hadn’t read yet instead.

After looking at the comic I’m even more impress with what Edgar Wright turned it into. If you grew up listening to rock, punk,  blue, R&B , really have any love of music; If you played in a band or still do, this movie is for you. I love the punk love angle as well, very well done. So that your assignment for this week , go get yourself some Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and enjoy the show.

Till Next Time. Stay Tuned.
