Fox Daredevil Rights Lapsing On October 10 Back To Marvel They Go? A Hopefull New Director Jumps On Board And Possible Character Rights Swaping?   Leave a comment

Hey Everybody,

Daredevil is really one of those Marvel characters that deserves a talented film maker to take the reins and deliver a kick ass, sick film from the late 70’s early 80’s source material. When growing up discovering the Frank Miller runs of the character far after they were new, I saw how raw, emotional and based in some realism a comic could be, as far as flawed human character behavior and fragility of relationships. All that with the fact that this guy is blind and can kick the ass of like 20 dudes at once in a red devil costume was a great hook for me. As I’ve grown up re reading these tales I see the real staying power of Daredevil as one of the coolest characters of the Marvel pantheon to me.

Then along comes director Mark Steven Johnson and Ben Affleck in 2003 to deliver an absolute ultimate 90 million dollar shit storm in the faces of fans courtesy of  20th Century Fox,  and my heart broke a little. Obviously not understanding the characters, story or what they had, Fox watered down the script and relationships so much on Johnson where the movie just has zero weight to it, and take some of the best marvel story lines and completely changes them like the studio got soap opera writers and producers that never ever read an issue of any comic or even gave a shit at all, to the point of paralleling the act of throwing a Molotov cocktail on the viewing audience that goes to these crap fests and hope not to get rammed up the ass yet again. Namely, me, my snooty geek buddies and you and yours.

The film front basically went silent for Daredevil for almost 8 year when Fox finally announced their reboot plans and attachment of director David Slade in the driver seat for the project. It could have been worse news, I like Slade’s earlier work before his Twilight series film, Hard Candy and 30 Days Of Night are both stylized, dark and graphic in the right ways. The word was he was working with a script/ idea some what based on the Frank Miller written 1986 comic story arc “Born Again” Daredevil comics issues #227-#233.

As of a about month ago David Slade dropped out of the project and it seemed like Daredevil was dead in the water again. Then an interesting article surfaced over at Variety stating that the rights were reverting back to Marvel as of October 10th this year unless they had a film in front of the cameras shooting before then, and Fox was so excited about a pitch done by director Joe Carnahan (Narc, A-Team, The Grey) for a gritty 70’s styled film, that they were in talks to get the rights extended for Daredevil in exchange for the rights to let Marvel Studios use Galactus and Silver Surfer  in future films. WOW, it all sounded too good to be true, Galactus and Silver Surfer back in the hand of Marvel would be a dream come true, especially with all the phase 2 films coming. Even the Joe Carnahan idea for the DD character sounded like something in the proper direction at least.

Very shortly after the Variety article a reply from 2oth Century Fox surfaced saying that “in no way was Galactus or Silver Surfer in play for a right swap”, and that the real intention of their meeting with Marvel was to determine whether they be interested in co financing the Joe Carnahan gritty 70’s styled Daredevil film to keep the character in play.

The real news on the matter dropped on director Joe Carnahan Twitter last night:

“Think my idea for a certain retro, red-suited, Serpico-styled superhero went up in smoke today kids.

We shall see. Time is NOT on anyone’s side.”Continuing talking today on Twitter,

Carnahan asked if fans wanted to see his sizzle piece that he presented to Fox?

“DD pitch was tremendous and everyone flipped for it. The clock ticked down at Fox, that’s why it went t*ts up.”

He posted an NC-17 and a PG-13 version of the reel,  both below are available below for your viewing pleasure:

So it looks like Daredevil will be going home to Marvel and I don’t see Disney financing a cool ass NC-17 1970’s crime thriller version of the character, but I am hopeful we’ll see old DD given some much needed love and attention, we can only hope. I still believe it can happen, like Deadpool or Wolverine it seems hard to fuck up suck “home run” characters, but Fox has done their best crack at doing so. More than anything in my life right now I really need to see a quality film about a blind guy in a devil costume kicking everyone’s ass. Please make it happen Marvel, the ball hopefully will be back in your court October 10th. Give us all something to flip over, I dare you.

Till Next Time. Stay Tuned.
